Parent/ Student Handbook
A safe, positive learning environment is required for students to learn effectively. Our PBIS (Positive Behavior Interventions and Support) program works to create that environment.
A key strategy of PBIS is prevention. Behavior can be taught and practiced just like an athlete or musician learns and practices. Students are given instruction on expected behavior. The majority of students have followed the expectations of behavior but have never been acknowledged for that behavior. PBIS allows for acknowledgement of appropriate behavior as well as the reteaching of proper behavior for those with issues. When problem behavior occurs, students are provided with a full continuum of supports to address the behavior.
What can I do to help with PBIS?
Review the behavior expectations with your child.
Ensure that your child is well rested and on time for each school day.
Ask your child about his/her day.
Encourage your child to do his/her homework and keep up with his/her classes.
Stay in contact with your child's teacher(s).
Encourage your child to use proper language and tone.
Practice polite phrases like "Thank you," "Please," and "Excuse me."
Be involved with the school. Attend school functions and activities when possible.
Volunteer.
Incorporate Be Respectful, Be Responsible, and Be Safe into your family rules.
Family Involvement has a positive effect on student behavior
When families are involved, students exhibit more positive attitudes and behavior.
When students report feeling support from both home and school, they have more self-confidence, feel school is more important, and they tend to do better in school.
Student at-risk behaviors such as alcohol use, violence, and other anti-social behaviors decrease as parent involvement increases.
